Ferramentas de Carpintaria e Marcenaria: Como se chamam. Para que servem.
Este livro e poster, dedicados às ferramentas manuais de Carpintaria e Marcenaria existem por uma razão muito simples: quis um dia encontrar um livro que me listasse as ferramentas essenciais utilizadas nestes ofícios, porque quando entro numa oficina gosto de pelo menos saber distinguir uma goiva de um formão, e não consegui encontrar nada que fosse claro e conciso.
Por isso, achei que ao estilo dos livros técnicos de outros tempos que tanto admiro e colecciono, valia a pena trabalhar a investigação que fiz para mim própria, tornando-a disponível a quem, tal como eu, quer simplesmente saber como se chama e para que serve cada uma destas ferramentas.
Agora sim, já toda a gente pode ficar a perceber a diferença entre uma garlopa e um rebote, ou finalmente descobrir como se chama aquela coisa esquisita com duas pegas laterais que funciona como uma plaina, mas não parece uma (é um corteché). Ufa.
No livro, encontrarão as 64 ferramentas manuais mais utilizadas nos ofícios da Carpintaria e Marcenaria devidamente identificadas, ilustradas e descritas. Mas acima de tudo, organizadas em seis grupos que permitem perceber logo que tipo de função tem a ferramenta, e também listadas num índice remissivo que permite fazer uma pesquisa rápida por nome.
Ambas as peças têm design gráfico da Maria Helena, que me ficou a odiar depois da 12738451ª alteração ao texto, mas valeu a pena sacrificar a nossa amizade, porque ficou tudo muito bonito e bem feito.
Os livros foram totalmente impressos e acabados cá no Porto, numa pequena edição de 50 exemplares.
Para quem não gosta de ler muito, temos o poster em tamanho A2, que dá um ar mais oficinal a qualquer espaço e fica sempre à vista para esclarecer dúvidas. Cada um destes foi impecavelmente impresso em serigrafia pelo Rodrigo, ali da Oficina Atalaia.

This book and poster about woodworking hand tools used in Carpentry and Joinery exist for a very simple reason: one day I needed to find a book that would simply list all these tools, because when I'm in a workshop I like to at least be able to tell apart a gouge from a chisel, and I couldn't find anything that was clear and simple.
So, I thought that in the style of the type of older technical books that I collect and appreciate so much, it was worth it to make the investigation I made for myself available to anyone that, like me, just needs to know the name of each tool and what they are used for.
Finally, now everybody can know the difference between a trying plane and a jack plane. Or find out what's the name of that weird tool that has two side handles, works like a plane but doesn't look like one (it's a spokeshave, people!).
In this book, you'll find the 64 most used hand tools in the crafts of Carpentry and Joinery identified, illustrated and properly described. But above all, organized in six main groups that will allow you to quickly understand what it is used for, and also a A-Z index that will allow you to quickly search a tool by its name.
Both the book and poster were designed by Maria Helena, that started hating me after I made the 12738451st alteration to the text, but it was completely worth it sacrificing our friendship, because everything came out looking very nice and well-done.
The books were printed right here in Porto, in a small edition of 50 copies.
If you're not too much into reading, there are the posters too, that will immediately provide a workshop vibe to any space and it is always there to clear your doubts. Each one of these was screenprinted by Rodrigo, from Oficina Atalaia.
For now, both book and poster will be available only in Portuguese, but an english version is a possibility in the future. So, please let me know if you would be interested in this.
